Lucian is a Director and Head of the Dispute Resolution Practice Group in the firm. He specialises in commercial litigation, public law and construction law where he represents clients from the public and private sector in various forums. Lucian joined the Phatshoane Henney Attorneys team during 2012 as a Senior Associate in the firm’s labour and litigation department. He was appointed as a Director in 2013.

Prior to joining the firm, he was a partner at Lovius Block Attorneys in Bloemfontein where hehad  commenced his legal career in 2005.

He attended the University of the Free State where he obtained his LL.B and LL.M degrees cum laude. In 2002 he became a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society in recognition of Academic Achievement. He received the Moritz Bobbert Award in 2005 for obtaining his LL.B degree cum laude, as well as the Dean’s Medal for the Best LL.M student in 2008.

Lucian was a member of the University of the Free State’s first team to compete in the Willem C Vis International Arbitration Competition in Vienna, Austria during 2005 and 2006.

In 2021 Lucian was appointed as the Head of the Dispute Resolution Practice Group of Phatshoane Henney Attorneys. where he continues to practice.

In addition hereto he served on the Free State Legal Practice Council’s Investigation Committee and Disciplinary Committee. He also served as the Chairperson of the Practice Management Training Committee of the Free State Legal Practice Council. Lucian has also served as a marker and moderator for the Free State Legal Practice Council's attorneys’ admission exams since 2020. In November 2021, Lucian was elected as a Council member of the National Legal Practice Council and now serves on the Disciplinary and Oversight Committee as well as the Rule, Ethics and Policies’ Committee.

Lucian was a part-time lecturer at the University of the Free State's Mercantile Law Department for three years. He continues to lecture at the Practical School for Legal Training with LEAD (Legal Education Training and Development) for the past 10 years where he lectures in the areas of High Court Practice, Magistrates’ Court Practice and Constitutional Law.

Lucian advises and assists clients with all aspects pertaining to civil litigation and specialises mainly in Commercial Litigation, Public Law and Construction Law for a number of clientele including the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Eskom, Centlec, Central University of Technology, Free State, University of the Free State and various other Governmental Departments and State Owned Companies.
 
He also advises on various general litigation matters such as on delictual claims, collections, commercial debtors, public law disputes, commercial arbitrations, building contract disputes, review applications in terms of PAJA and various other aspects relating to litigation. He has successfully represented clients in various forums which includes High Courts, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court.

Lucian has extensive experience in Construction Law where he represents Corporate and Governmental Clients and State-Owned Companies in various Commercial Arbitrations, Mediations and Adjudications in disputes on the interpretation and application of Construction Contracts such as the JBCC, FIDIC, NEC and GCC.

He regards client satisfaction as the standard for the measurement of success in practice. Lucian also enjoys mentoring and being involved in the training and education of young legal practitioners, which is a passion of his. To play a small a role in young legal practitioners entering the legal professionn, he continues his involvement in legal education.
