New Breed Art Webinar with Ben Orkin

Grab the opportunity to join in the second of our series of New Breed Art Webinars - presented by Phatshoane Henney Attorneys and sponsored by Absa: a thought-provoking conversation with South African contemporary sculptor Ben Orkin, led by Miró van der Vloed, 2021 New Breed Art Competition Merit Award winner and member of the Free State Art Collective.

With mentorship being a very important focus of the New Breed Art offering this year, the New Breed Art Webinar Series features established, leading South African artists who we will be in conversation with. This is all in addition to and in run-up to the 2022 New Breed Art Competition later this year.

Ben Orkin is a sculptor based in Cape Town, represented by Whatiftheworld Gallery. His ceramic vessels reflect queer intimacy, oscillating between moments of nourishment and dependency, validation and resistance, love and separation. Their textured finish is evidence of the hand-builder’s careful touch, imbuing the sculptures with a sense of the tactile and, at times, the erotic.

Orkin graduated in 2021 with a BFA from Michaelis School of Fine Art in Cape Town, South Africa. In 2019 he held his first solo presentation, You told me… and in 2021 held his latest solo exhibition, Extra Safe, with WHATIFTHEWORLD. He was awarded the Simon Gerson prize in 2021 and his work has been recently acquired by the A4 Foundation.

This rising star therefore has much to share about his quick ascent from graduation, to getting gallery representation and then exhibiting in the international arena.
