Phatshoane Henney inc. has over the years built up extensive experience in providing specialist Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) support, advice and assistance to clients in the public and private sector. The firm has also built up working relationships with many of the national BEE verification agencies, providing a good platform to assist its clients in understanding, implementing and planning for sustainable BEE and what verification agencies expect of businesses when conducting a BEE verification.

To assist some of our institutional clients in educating their vendors and suppliers regarding the importance and necessity for proper BEE planning and obtaining a BEE certificate, PHi often assists clients with the holding of information workshops on BEE where client vendors and suppliers are invited to attend and obtain more information on the process of becoming BEE compliant and what the client’s specific requirements for BEE compliance are.

PHi recently held a BEE workshop on behalf of Bloemwater Water Board at Emzini Guest House in Bloemfontein. The purpose of the workshop was to bring Bloemwater’s vendors and suppliers up to speed with the new Preferential Procurement Regulations and to enlighten them on BEE compliance in general.

The workshop, arranged by Bloemwater, was aimed to benefit in particular their suppliers who qualify as Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). The workshop was well attended with many of the suppliers interacting and obtaining value from the day as well as receiving informative brochures from Bloemwater providing further step-by-step guidance to becoming BEE compliant.

Sam Moleko, Director at PHi, took the attendees through a thorough explanation of what BEE entails, where it comes from, and why it was important for all businesses to understand the requirements of BEE and take steps to compliance.

The workshop also dealt with the new changes to the Preferential Procurement Regulations and how these changes affects businesses, the different scorecards applicable and the different tendering procedures that now apply the BEE scorecard rating in the evaluation of tenders.

A number of questions were dealt with throughout the day and suppliers commented on how informative and helpful the workshop was for them. For Bloemwater the day was a successful exercise in educating and informing their SMME suppliers of critical factors impacting on their continued tendering and working with Bloemwater.
