A ray of hope for Sunflower Children’s Hospice

Not even the dark clouds outside dampened the spirit and smiles of the children at Sunflower Children’s Hospice. Their faces just light up with joy when new guests arrive to meet them. At first glance, they look like normal, happy children. It is only when you hear their stories that the emotions start building up, like the storm clouds outside.

Not everyone has the heart to work in palliative care, and Sunflower Children’s Hospice is an admirable example of compassionate people caring for sick children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions.

They are a non-profit organisation operating from a “Sunflower house” at the National hospital in Bloemfontein.

A value of care

The value system of Phatshoane Henney Attorneys is simple and guides their commitment to being a New Breed law firm and to always set the right standard, by caring about their staff, clients and the community.

This central directive guides all we do and ensures we never lose sight of what is important. We invest in our staff and give back to our communities.

With this value of community care in mind, Phatshoane Henney Attorneys decided to scale down on their staff year-end function and donate funds to a non-profit organisation.

The CEO of Phatshoane Henney Attorneys, Lesley Mokgoro, and staff members of the firm visited the Sunflower Children’s Hospice on 8 December to deliver the donation. They spent time with the children and listened to their life stories, as told by the staff.

A 25-year journey

“It is a very big donation and we did not expect it. On behalf of Sunflower Children’s Hospice, I would like to thank Phatshoane Henney Attorneys for their time and contribution. If it is not for donations like this, we will not be able to look after our children. We will be celebrating our 25th birthday next year and we are thankful that we still get support from the Bloemfontein community to keep our doors open,” said Melinda Muller, Professional nurse in charge of the Sunflower Hospice.

A message from Lesley: “I would like to encourage, or even challenge, everyone to support their community. Make time to reach out to others and spread the rays of hope.”
