04 October 2022 974
27 art works by 24 new breed artists is being showcased at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein as of 4 October until 14 November with the official opening of the 2022 New Breed Art Competition Exhibition having taken place on the evening of 4 October.

The 6th edition of the competition is presented by Phatshoane Henney Attorneys in association with the Oliewenhuis Art Museum, the Art Bank of South Africa and the Free State Art Collective.

In the build up to the competition as part of its art development outreach, Phatshoane Henney Attorneys with sponsorship support from ABSA Bank Limited, hosted a number of engaging online art thought leadership webinars with key South African artists. In the first webinar, local artist Bontle Tau interviewed contemporary artist Cow Mash, followed by Miró van der Vloed interviewing Cape Town sculptor Ben Orkin, and then Lyrene Kühn-Botma hosting a discussion with contemporary Lithographer Leshoka Joe Legate. The final instalment of this amazing public webinar series will be held on 27 October where former New Breed Art Competition Merit Award Winner Andre Rose will interview internationally renowned artist Tracey Rose. More information on the webinar will be made available on the competition Facebook page.

At the well-attended exhibition opening, Lesley Mokgoro, CEO of Phatshoane Henney Attorneys and spokesperson for the competition, announced the nationally recognised judges that were involved in selecting the works to form part of the competition exhibition.

Storm Janse van Rensburg, Senior Curator and Head of Curatorial Affairs at Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town; Melissa Goba, Independent Curator and panel convener of the MTN and University of Johannesburg New Contemporaries Legacy Panel;  and Nathi Gumede, Assistant Project Manager of the Art Bank of South Africa, form the panel of independent judges that selected the art works for the competition exhibition and will decide the 2022 competition winners.

“The selected works traverse many different themes, materials and perspectives with each work bearing strong testimony to the saying art is not what you see, but what you make others see. The works are fresh, provocative and inspiring, encouraging the viewer to take time to discover and evaluate each work and artist statement. The judges have in my view set the bar high and in doing so confirmed the importance of the New Breed Art Competition and the very high standard of the competition. I don’t envy the judges the difficult task of eventually deciding on the winner” remarked Mokgoro.

He went on to point out that a shortcoming in the entries received was a shortage of digital works. With digital works introduced as a new category to the competition in 2021, it was somewhat disappointing to not have seen more works in this exciting medium being entered, and he encouraged artists to consider this for the 2023 iteration of the competition.

A broad variety of styles and mediums, including paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and mixed media artworks are on show and for sale till the 13th of November 2022. The exhibition is also fully virtual and can be viewed at the official website www.newbreedart.co.za where the public can vote for their favourite artist to receive the Public Choice Award, with the artist receiving the most online votes receiving R10 000 in prize money and recognition as the public choice winner. Voting closes on 31 October.

The overall winner of the 2022 competition will receive R50 000 in prize money, with the runner-up receiving R20 000 and a further two merit award winners each receiving R10 000. The winners will be announced on 3 November 2022.
