Callout to Free State artists: apply for two-day long mentorship programme with South African artist, Willie Bester

Free State artists are invited to apply for possible selection for a two-day practical mentorship programme for emerging artists presented by renowned South African artist, Willie Bester.

The Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition was established in 2016 by Bloemfontein law firm, Phatshoane Henney Attorneys, as a unique visual arts competition for Free State province artists. Now in its second year, the competition continues to provide an excellent platform for Free State artists to showcase their talent and contemporary Free State art, thereby allowing them to benefit from the exposure the competition provides.

The Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition is proudly presented in association with Oliewenhuis Art Museum. Oliewenhuis Art Museum is a satellite of the National Museum, Bloemfontein, an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture.

We believe that education is a vital element for the successful continuance of this competition and we therefore offer a two-day practical mentorship programme for emerging artists presented by renowned South African artist, Willie Bester. The procedure for the practical mentorship is as follows:

Willie Bester and a group of emerging artists will conduct a workshop that will focus on creating an assemblage sculpture with found objects.
The group will be divided into smaller groups, but ultimately each participant will create their own sculpture under the guidance of Willie Bester.

All applicants will have to submit a formal proposal and a fair selection process will take place by an appointed committee.
Applicants must have some previous knowledge about working with heavy duty machinery, such as those used for welding and grinding.
