2017 Competition entry

Teboho Mokhothu

Details:
Not Signed
Tempera (egg and oil paint)
65 cm x 42 cm

Description:
In his concept Teboho painted a cactus plant reflecting South Africa.  A cactus is a plant that looks beautiful and mostly grows in open places. It is an independent plant that has many branches.

At the same time the plant has thorns to protect itself that makes the plant look dangerous. However, look at South Africa, in which we find some of the same qualities as that of a cactus. South Africa is a beautiful country because of its history.  But there are many dangers that can be compared to the thorns of a cactus: things like xenophobic attacks, the Marikana massacre, corruption and the Fees Must Fall protest.

Nonetheless, the painting shows old and dead branches, as well as strong, green branches, that symbolise not only death, but life as well.
