Robynne Gouws

Details:
Signed
Pigment pen on Aqua paper
59 cm x 42 cm

Description:
Robynne photographed herself performing the positions of the sport, calisthenics in a light controlled environment. This position is captured in two different places and is portrayed through overlapping and composition.

She worked with shadow, light and a line drawing technique and used this to depict the shapes they make on the body and how the muscles are made clearer due to these shapes. The body being “cut off” near the edges of the paper, being a compositional element, creates a sense of bodily motion. This also creates a form of depth regardless of the emptiness felt due to the blank spaces on the paper. The body is controlled, and through the drawing of lines, it emphasises the control of the drawing itself.

Her aim was to depict depth due to the positions and shadows of the body, as well as to express the shapes and contours made on the body by shadows and light and how they express the connecting muscles of the body.
