Now in its third year, the Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition 2018 has attracted just over 130 high quality artworks as entries into this year’s competition.

“It is clear that Free State artists had indeed heeded our call to ‘be brave, be bold and enter’, with entries having been received from all over the province, including a large number from educational institutions such as the University of the Free State, the Central University of Technology and Motheo TVET College “ remarks Magdel Louw, competition coordinator.

The artworks submitted at Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein last week include paintings, drawings, sculptures, and ceramic, cement and mixed media artworks. Of these the top entries will be chosen to form part of the public competition exhibition at Oliewenhuis Art Museum from 18 October to 25 November 2018. “We are very excited about the wide variety and level of excellence shown in the works received, which will make for another excellent competition exhibition this year.”

During this time the top works will also be exhibited online on the official competition website (www.newbreedart.co.za), where the public are invited to vote for their favourite artist to win the Public Choice Award and receive R10 000 in prize money. “A single vote can make all the difference. That’s why it’s so important that people vote in large numbers to ensure their favourite artist wins,” adds Louw.

Of the rest of the total R100 000 in prize money, R50 000 will be awarded to the winner, R20 000 to the runner-up and R10 000 each to two Merit Award winners.

The winners, as chosen by an independent judging panel, will be announced on 8 November 2018.
