In only its second year, the Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition has attracted just over a 100 high quality artworks as entries into this year’s much anticipated competition.

The artworks submitted at Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein last week include paintings, drawings, sculptures, and ceramic, cement and mixed media artworks, entered by artists from as far as Virginia, Welkom, Harrismith and Thaba Nchu. Educational institutions such as the University of the Free State, the Central University of Technology, Motheo TVET College and Maluti TVET College are also well represented.

“The interest and enthusiasm of our Free State artists are clear from the substantial number of entries we’ve received,” reflects Ester le Roux, curator of the Oliewenhuis Art Museum. “On top of that the overall quality of artworks entered is very high - and the diversity of media used, as well as the inventive and technically sound ways in which media is applied throughout, are very exciting. I’m really looking forward to curating the Phatshoane Henney New Breed exhibition of selected artworks, as it will make for a refreshing visual treat, showcasing our remarkable local talent.”

Magdel Louw, competition co-ordinator and marketing manager at Phatshoane Henney Attorneys, agrees that the quality of entries received is hugely encouraging. “Through this art competition, it is our wish to celebrate the excellence and creativity of artists based in the Free State. The quality of works entered this year has already gone a long way towards making this wish, a reality. We can’t wait to reveal the top works to the public!”

Such high standards will however not make it any easier for the public to choose their favourite artist to win the Public Choice Award. “That’s why it’s all the more important that people should vote in large numbers to ensure their favourite artist wins,” adds Louw.

The exhibition featuring the top artists in line to win their share of the total prize money of R100 000, opens on 5 October 2017 at Oliewenhuis Art Museum, and will also be showcased on the official competition website, www.phinc.co.za/art.

The winners will be announced on 9 November 2017.
