An overwhelming number of artists from all over the Free State attended the Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition information session at Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, 3 May.

More than 130 artists interested in entering this first of its kind Free State visual arts competition arrived from as far as Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu, Qwaqwa, Bethlehem, Smithfield and Philippolis for more details on the entrance process. Sam Moleko, director from Phatshoane Henney Attorneys, Magdel Louw, competition coordinator, and Ester le Roux, curator at Oliewenhuis Art Museum, addressed the audience and their questions.

This is less than a month after the competition, held in association with Oliewenhuis Art Competition, was launched on 7 April. Aimed at discovering new and emerging Free State-based artists, it is to provide broad corporate and public exposure to showcase contemporary art from the province.

The competition is open to all South African artists that reside in or are primarily resident in the Free State, are 18 years or older and have not held a solo exhibition at a commercial gallery involving more than 20 works.

Entries are to be submitted at Oliewenhuis from 5 to 11 September 2016.
