On 18 July the Phenomenal Woman association of black business women from Bloemfontein and surrounds gathered for the Empowered @ Work labour seminar at Phatshoane Henney Attorneys.

As the brainchild of business woman Thato Mokhothu, founder of Refilwe Tshiamo Trading, Phenomenal Woman was established this year to empower women to achieve better things in their lives, both in business and in everyday life.

In line with this, the seminar hosted by the Phatshoane Henney Attorneys labour department addressed a variety of labour issues such as employment contracts, UIF, and misconduct and sexual harassment in the workplace. Presented in a way that’s easy to understand, the underlying aim of the seminar was to arm business women with the necessary legal know-how to ensure a firm footing in work related matters.

Lesley Mokgoro, Director in the Labour Department at Phatshoane Henney Attorneys, points out that on 9 August, South Africa will be celebrating National Women’s Day to pay homage to South African women. August has also been declared Women’s Month as a tribute to thousands of women who marched to the Union Buildings in 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. “While the battle today is no longer against the carrying of passes, we as society, government and businesses still face many challenges – and we believe women should be at the forefront to address women empowerment programmes in political, public, private and educational sector.”

Leah Molatseli, Associate in the Labour Department, adds that it’s therefore particularly fitting that this seminar is focused on the empowerment of women, illustrating Phatshoane Henney Attorney’s commitment to this great cause. “This seminar will assist women to enhance the operations of their respective businesses and to enable them to make decisions that will not expose their business, or them as employees, to any risks.  As Kofi Anan has once said, ‘There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.’”
